Unpleasant emotion inhibits attentional focus toward a peripheral target in a visual search: an ERP study.

Previous studies have found that emotional states affect the extent of attention, and the effect has been explained by adaptive views. If the adaptive explanations are true, emotion should modulate attentional focus toward a peripheral stimulus. The present study investigated if emotion affects the focus of attention toward a peripheral target in a visual search paradigm with event-related brain potential (ERP) measurement. In each trial of the experiment, participants performed a visual search task after an emotion (unpleasant, neutral, or pleasant) was induced by presenting an international affective picture system (IAPS) image. We measured N2pc, which is an ERP index reflecting attentional focus toward a peripheral target in a visual search, and compared the amplitudes among the emotion conditions. According to the adaptive view of emotional effects on cognition, this study hypothesized that unpleasant emotion would enhance the focus of attention, and pleasant emotion would inhibit it. These hypotheses predicted that N2pc amplitude would increase with unpleasant emotion and decrease with pleasant emotion. However, this study obtained inconsistent results; N2pc amplitude decreased in the unpleasant condition, and there was no significant effect of pleasant emotion on the ERP. The results suggest that unpleasant emotion inhibited the attentional focusing process. This is the first report to examine how emotion modulates the focus of attention toward a peripheral target in a visual search by using ERP. The findings contribute to understanding the relationship between emotion and cognition.

Exploring the neurofunctional impairments and cognitive biases concerning food and body related stimuli in anorexia nervosa: An integrated EEG and eye-tracking study protocol.

Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) exhibit significant cognitive and neural disturbances compared to healthy individuals when processing food and body-related stimuli. These disturbances not only contribute to the manifestation and chronification of their pathological eating behaviour but also underscore the complex interplay of cognitive, emotional, and neurobiological factors in AN. However, the precise underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms of these disturbances remain a compelling area of investigation. This study presents a protocol developed for conducting a cross-sectional quasi-experimental study using a mixed model ANOVA approach with a crossover design. Our participants will consist of 20 patients with an active diagnosis of AN, 20 Overweight/obese individuals, and 20 Healthy Controls (HCs) with a normal BMI. An integrated eye-tracking and EEG methodology will be used in conjunction, with the primary aim of assessing participants' cognitive and neural processing towards high and low-calorie food stimuli. On an exploratory level, by utilizing the same methods, the present study will also investigate AN patients' responses towards high weight, normal weight, low weight, and self-body pictures, as well as towards images from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) characterized by elevated valence and arousal levels. Additionally, behavioural methods such as yes or no questions, and self-reported questionnaires will be administered. The EEG and eye-tracking data will be analysed at early (50-300 ms) and late (350-500 ms) time intervals. The investigation of the underlying cognitive and neural processes employed by patients with AN during the processing of food and body-related stimuli can help us develop a better understanding of the cognitive and neural mechanisms that contribute to the manifestation and maintenance of the disorder and assist in the development of more effective screening methods. Ethical approval for the study has been obtained by the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee on 27.04.2023 (ΕΕΒΚ/ΕΠ/2023/19), and by the University of Cyprus (20.02.2023). Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants.

Predicting COVID-19 Vaccination Uptake Using a Small and Interpretable Set of Judgment and Demographic Variables: Cross-Sectional Cognitive Science Study.

Despite COVID-19 vaccine mandates, many chose to forgo vaccination, raising questions about the psychology underlying how judgment affects these choices. Research shows that reward and aversion judgments are important for vaccination choice; however, no studies have integrated such cognitive science with machine learning to predict COVID-19 vaccine uptake. This study aims to determine the predictive power of a small but interpretable set of judgment variables using 3 machine learning algorithms to predict COVID-19 vaccine uptake and interpret what profile of judgment variables was important for prediction. We surveyed 3476 adults across the United States in December 2021. Participants answered demographic, COVID-19 vaccine uptake (ie, whether participants were fully vaccinated), and COVID-19 precaution questions. Participants also completed a picture-rating task using images from the International Affective Picture System. Images were rated on a Likert-type scale to calibrate the degree of liking and disliking. Ratings were computationally modeled using relative preference theory to produce a set of graphs for each participant (minimum R2>0.8). In total, 15 judgment features were extracted from these graphs, 2 being analogous to risk and loss aversion from behavioral economics. These judgment variables, along with demographics, were compared between those who were fully vaccinated and those who were not. In total, 3 machine learning approaches (random forest, balanced random forest [BRF], and logistic regression) were used to test how well judgment, demographic, and COVID-19 precaution variables predicted vaccine uptake. Mediation and moderation were implemented to assess statistical mechanisms underlying successful prediction. Age, income, marital status, employment status, ethnicity, educational level, and sex differed by vaccine uptake (Wilcoxon rank sum and chi-square P<.001). Most judgment variables also differed by vaccine uptake (Wilcoxon rank sum P<.05). A similar area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was achieved by the 3 machine learning frameworks, although random forest and logistic regression produced specificities between 30% and 38% (vs 74.2% for BRF), indicating a lower performance in predicting unvaccinated participants. BRF achieved high precision (87.8%) and AUROC (79%) with moderate to high accuracy (70.8%) and balanced recall (69.6%) and specificity (74.2%). It should be noted that, for BRF, the negative predictive value was <50% despite good specificity. For BRF and random forest, 63% to 75% of the feature importance came from the 15 judgment variables. Furthermore, age, income, and educational level mediated relationships between judgment variables and vaccine uptake. The findings demonstrate the underlying importance of judgment variables for vaccine choice and uptake, suggesting that vaccine education and messaging might target varying judgment profiles to improve uptake. These methods could also be used to aid vaccine rollouts and health care preparedness by providing location-specific details (eg, identifying areas that may experience low vaccination and high hospitalization).

Emotional atypical arousal ratings for unpleasant stimuli in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, including alteration in emotional processing and recognition of emotions. We explored the effects of PD on the emotional behavioral ratings using a battery of affective visual stimuli selected from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Twenty-two patients diagnosed with idiopathic PD and 22 healthy controls (HC), matched by age, gender, and education, were enrolled in the study. Following a clinical assessment, each participant was asked to evaluate the arousal and valence of affective visual stimuli, and response time was recorded. Disease-specific measures including the MDS Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS UPDRS) and the Non-Motor Symptom Scale (NMSS) were also collected. PD patients exhibited higher arousal responses compared to HC for negative/unpleasant pictures (scoring 7.32 ± 0.88 vs 5.43 ± 2.06, p < 0.001). The arousal response to negative/unpleasant pictures was correlated with measures of non-motor burden in PD (MDS UPDRS I and NMSS, rho = 0.480 and p = 0.023, rho = 0.533 and p = 0.010, respectively). Impaired emotional processing characterizes PD patients with mild disease and is related to the non-motor symptom burden. Given the importance of emotional processing for the development and maintenance of close interpersonal relationship and for coping with specific medical situations, it is crucial to direct PD patients towards therapeutic interventions focused on the recognition and processing of emotions.

Opioid Receptor Mu 1 Gene (OPRM1) A118G Polymorphism and Emotional Modulation of Pain.

The A118G polymorphism in the opioid receptor mu 1 gene (OPRM1) is associated with decreased opioid receptor availability, altered emotion, and increased pain. Given that emotions modulate pain (positive emotions inhibit pain, negative emotions enhance pain), we predicted that G allele carriers would experience impaired emotional modulation of pain compared to non-G allele carriers. Emotional pictures (ie, erotica, neutral, attack) from the International Affective Picture System were used by permission from the authors to experimentally manipulate emotions in 64 adult participants while painful electrocutaneous stimulations were delivered in a cross-sectional study. Ratings of arousal and valence/pleasure were made in response to pictures, and pain ratings and a physiological measure of spinal nociception (ie, nociceptive flexion reflex, NFR) were collected in response to painful stimulations. Secondary analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between the A118G polymorphism and emotional modulation of pain/NFR. Exposure to emotional pictures elicited similar changes in valence, but G-carriers rated erotic pictures as more arousing. In non-carriers, pain was facilitated by attack pictures and pain and NFR were inhibited by erotic pictures relative to neutral pictures. Among G-carriers, pain was facilitated by negative emotional pictures but there was no pain or NFR inhibition by positive emotional pictures. The altered response to pleasant stimuli further supports the role of opioids in appetitive behavior and describes how the A118G polymorphism may prevent carriers from inhibiting pain during pleasure.

Effects of affectively-loaded childhood-related photos from the IAPS on the induction of involuntary autobiographical memories in young and older adults.

Aging produces changes in emotional reactivity and the retrieval of autobiographical memories. The main aim of this study was to assess age-related differences, comparing emotion induction and autobiographical memory recall using photos from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) that are thematically related to childhood. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted, with the participation of 327 individuals (168 young adults and 159 older adults) with no cognitive impairment and aged between 18 and 88 years. We showed the participants a set of five pictures from the IAPS, the affective content of which was related to childhood. Two of these were considered to be positive images, two negative and one neutral, according to the valence of these pictures in the literature. The main study variables were the reactions associated with emotional valence or pleasure, arousal and dominance, after viewing the photos, and the autobiographical memories retrieved by the participants. The younger adults retrieved a larger number of memories than their older counterparts. As regards the responses to the five affective pictures (IAPS) on valence, arousal and dominance (IAPS), statistically significant differences were only found for pictures 2,345 (BlackEye), with a more positive valence in the group of older adults and higher arousal in the young ones, and 2,312 (Mother), with a more positive valence in the group of older persons. A greater number of memories were retrieved for the photos that generated higher levels of pleasure, greater relaxation and greater emotional control. Of the variables that may be associated with the elicitation of involuntary autobiographical memories, the most significant are age and a positive stimulus.

Neural Process of Emotional Valence Quality in Extraversion: Localisation, Components and Specific Electrodes Analyses

The process of emotion is greatly influenced by people’s personalities. This study aimed to determine the interaction between extraversion continuum (extravert, ambivert, and introvert) and the process of emotion from different valence quality of visual stimuli (high, moderate, low). Potential participants had their extraversion trait screened using the Extraversion-Five-Factor Nonverbal Personality Questionnaire (E-FF-NPQ). Ninety participants (30 for each group of personality) enrolled in this study. In the Event-Related Potential (ERP) session, participants’ emotion was evoked by a series of pictures (visual stimuli) from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) with different valence qualities (high, moderate, low). No significant interaction between extraversion continuum and valence quality was observed at component level of analysis. However, several specific electrodes revealed significant interaction – P3 latency (p=0.03) and F8 amplitude (p=0,02) of N200 and Cz latency of P300 (p=0.02). Low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) revealed almost similar pattern of N200 and P300 localisation in the high valence state, particularly among extraverts. At the very least, a minor difference between extravert and non-extravert could be expected with careful consideration of cultural and methodological bias.

Developing Mood-Based Computer-Tailored Health Communication for Smoking Cessation: Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

Computer-tailored health communication (CTHC), a widely used strategy to increase the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions, is focused on selecting the best messages for an individual. More recently, CTHC interventions have been tested using contextual information such as participants' current stress or location to adapt message selection. However, mood has not yet been used in CTCH interventions and may increase their effectiveness. This study aims to examine the association of mood and smoking cessation message effectiveness among adults who currently smoke cigarettes. In January 2022, we recruited a web-based convenience sample of adults who smoke cigarettes (N=615; mean age 41.13 y). Participants were randomized to 1 of 3 mood conditions (positive, negative, or neutral) and viewed pictures selected from the International Affective Picture System to induce an emotional state within the assigned condition. Participants then viewed smoking cessation messages with topics covering five themes: (1) financial costs or rewards, (2) health, (3) quality of life, (4) challenges of quitting, and (5) motivation or reasons to quit. Following each message, participants completed questions on 3 constructs: message receptivity, perceived relevance, and their motivation to quit. The process was repeated 30 times. We used 1-way ANOVA to estimate the association of the mood condition on these constructs, controlling for demographics, cigarettes per day, and motivation to quit measured during the pretest. We also estimated the association between mood and outcomes for each of the 5 smoking message theme categories. There was an overall statistically significant effect of the mood condition on the motivation to quit outcome (P=.02) but not on the message receptivity (P=.16) and perceived relevance (P=.86) outcomes. Participants in the positive mood condition reported significantly greater motivation to quit compared with those in the negative mood condition (P=.005). Participants in the positive mood condition reported higher motivation to quit after viewing smoking cessation messages in the financial (P=.03), health (P=.01), quality of life (P=.04), and challenges of quitting (P=.03) theme categories. We also compared each mood condition and found that participants in the positive mood condition reported significantly greater motivation to quit after seeing messages in the financial (P=.01), health (P=.003), quality of life (P=.01), and challenges of quitting (P=.01) theme categories than those in the negative mood condition. Our findings suggest that considering mood may be important for future CTHC interventions. Because those in the positive mood state at the time of message exposure were more likely to have greater quitting motivations, smoking cessation CTHC interventions may consider strategies to help improve participants' mood when delivering these messages. For those in neutral and negative mood states, focusing on certain message themes (health and motivation to quit) may be more effective than other message themes.

The potential impact of emotionally loaded stimuli on over/under-estimating neutral situations among power plant control-room operators.

Human emotions vary on a contextual basis. The significance of emotions becomes even more salient in Control Room Operators (CROs) in power plants. This study investigated the effects of emotionally loaded pictures on over/underestimating neutral situations. Twenty CROs voluntarily enrolled in the present study. Twenty-one blocks were considered, including ten emotionally loaded and 11 neutral blocks. The stimuli were alternatively submitted to subjects in random order. Each block comprised 13 images from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), which were shown for 5 seconds. Subjects were required to complete the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) after exposure to the first and the last neutral blocks, which were identical. Our analyses showed significant differences between IAPS arousal and SAM1 and SAM2 arousal ratings (p SAM1&IAPS = 0.00, p SAM2&IAPS = 0.02). There was no significant relationship between the first and the second arousals, and emotionally loaded images corresponded to no significant difference in terms of valence. The findings suggested that the participants overestimated neutral situations compared with IAPS only in arousal level. Furthermore, CROs can still retain their ability to assess neutral situations in the case of viewing emotional stimuli, especially in valence level, at least half an hour after the first rating. A study design with pure negative/positive and high arousal levels may still provide even more significant results.

Effect of experimental modulation of mood on exertional dyspnoea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Dyspnoea is a debilitating symptom in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and a range of other chronic cardiopulmonary diseases and is often associated with anxiety and depression. The present study examined the effect of visually-induced mood shifts on exertional dyspnoea in individuals with COPD. Following familiarization, 20 participants with mild to severe COPD (age 57-79 years) attended three experimental sessions on separate days, performing two 5-min treadmill exercise tests separated by a 30-min interval on each day. During each exercise test, participants viewed either a positive, negative or neutral set of images sourced from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) and rated dyspnoea or leg fatigue (0-10). Heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2 ) were measured at 1-min intervals during each test. Mood valence ratings were obtained using Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) scale (1-9). Mood valence ratings were significantly higher when viewing positive (end-exercise mean ± SEM = 7.6 ± 0.3) compared to negative IAPS images (2.4 ± 0.3, p < 0.001). Dyspnoea intensity (mean ± SEM = 5.8 ± 0.4) and dyspnoea unpleasantness (5.6 ± 0.3) when viewing negative images were significantly higher compared to positive images (4.2 ± 0.4, p = 0.004 and 3.4 ± 0.5, p = 0.003). Eighty-five percent of participants (n = 17) met the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) criteria for both dyspnoea intensity and unpleasantness. HR, SpO2 and leg fatigue did not differ significantly between conditions. These findings indicate that the negative affective state worsens dyspnoea in COPD, thereby suggesting strategies aimed at reducing the likelihood of negative mood or improving the mood may be effective in managing morbidity associated with dyspnoea in COPD.

Fear-related visual stimuli do not promote internal focus of attention in older adults

BackgroundThe influence of internal focus (IF) on postural balance needs to be determined when assessing fall risk in older adults. Moreover, the mechanism through which IF is triggered should be elucidated. Research questionDoes fear unrelated to threats to postural balance modulate IF during postural control? MethodsThe participants were 16 community-dwelling older adults. We generated visual stimuli for neutral and fear conditions using the International Affective Picture System. Participants were assessed for postural control while standing on a stabilometer and looking at projected images. The IF allocated to postural control during task was assessed immediately after the task using the Conscious Movement Processing subscale of the Movement-Specific Reinvestment Scale (MSRS-CMP). Sympathetic activity was assessed using the mean low-frequency/high-frequency ratio (LF/HF), and posture was evaluated using the root mean square area (RMS-A), anteroposterior mean power frequency (MPF-AP), mediolateral MPF, and co-contraction index. Differences (Δ) in the MSRS-CMP, RMS-A and MPF between the neutral/fear conditions and control condition were calculated. Each index was also compared among the control, neutral, and fear conditions. The correlations between ΔMSRS-CMP and postural measures were evaluated. Equivalence tests were conducted to determine whether change of IF was different among conditions. ResultsThe MSRS-CMP score did not differ significantly among conditions; equivalence was observed. The LF/HF and MPF-AP in the fear condition were higher than in the other conditions. The RMS-A in the fear condition was lower than in the neutral condition. ΔMSRS-CMP and ΔMPF-AP were significantly negatively correlated. SignificanceThe results of this study suggest that feelings of fear affect postural control but not the IF of attention. Taken together with previous research, the findings of this study suggest that consideration of the fear-inducing context may be useful in assessments of, and interventions for, older adults with a fall risk.

The effects of emotional stimuli on Word retrieval in people with aphasia

PurposePrior studies have shown that people with aphasia (PWA) have demonstrated superior language performance for emotional compared to nonemotional stimuli on a range of tasks, including auditory comprehension, verbal pragmatics, repetition, reading, and writing. However, studies on word retrieval, specifically, have suggested a possible interference effect of emotion on naming. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the emotional valence of stimuli on word retrieval in a series of naming tasks in PWA. MethodThirteen PWA and 13 neurotypical controls participated in four single-word naming tasks, including 1) object picture naming, 2) action picture naming, 3) category-member generation, and 4) verb generation. Each task included three valence sets of positively-, negatively-, and neutrally-rated pictures or words, which were obtained from the standardized International Affective Picture System (Lang et al., 2008) and the Affective Norms for Emotional Words (Bradley and Lang, 1999) databases. Accuracy and reaction time (RT) were measured and compared across groups, tasks, and valence sets. ResultsEmotional stimuli, especially negative stimuli, resulted in worse naming performance, as measured by accuracy and RT, compared to nonemotional stimuli in PWA and neurotypical controls. This effect was relatively robust across the four naming tasks. In most cases, negative stimuli resulted in lower accuracy and slower RT than positive stimuli. ConclusionsThese findings suggest that stimulus valence may interfere with word retrieval for PWA and neurotypical adults and that this effect is robust across different types of naming tasks that vary by word class (nouns versus verbs) and stimulus type (pictures versus words). Negative stimuli resulted in worse naming performance than positive stimuli. These results suggest that emotionality of stimuli is an important variable to consider in word retrieval research.

Determining a Subset of Discrete Emotion-Evoking Images from the International Affective Picture System in a Turkish Sample

The International Affective Picture System (IAPS), widely utilized in emotion research, is based on a dimensional approach. It includes 1196 colored static images representing different semantic categories, with valence, arousal, and dominance ratings determined for each one. However, the specific discrete emotions evoked by these images within the IAPS remain incompletely understood. Therefore, numerous investigations have been conducted in different cultural contexts to address this matter. This study aimed to determine a subset of images from the IAPS that elicit discrete emotions. To achieve this goal, an image was selected for each semantic category within the IAPS, employing specific criteria, and the elicited discrete emotions were subsequently examined in a Turkish sample. Additionally, valence ratings for these images were obtained within the Turkish culture, facilitating cross-cultural comparisons. Sixty Turkish students (43 female) aged between 19-25 participated in this study. The participants rated the valence, discrete emotion category, and the intensity of the determined discrete emotion (1 = none; 9 = very strongly) for 231 selected images from the IAPS, respectively. Valence ratings were obtained using the paper-pencil version of the Self-Assessment Manikin. Accordingly, 76 images, of which intensity ratings above six were classified into a single discrete emotion with the agreement of &gt;70% and above among the participants. Furthermore, the obtained data were compared with the results of studies conducted in different cultural settings to explore potential cultural differences. Overall, the results highlighted the importance of selecting culture-specific stimuli in emotion studies.

THE EFFECTS OF PERSONALITY TRAITS AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ON EMOTIONAL INFORMATION PROCESSING SPEED

In this present study, we aimed to explore whether personality traits within the Big Five model and trait emotional intelligence may have the ability to predict the response speed to emotional stimuli in athletes. We also investigated whether athletes' response speed may differ due to the stimuli's emotional content. The sample included 62 male student-athletes who participated in the study. Participants first completed measures of personality and emotional intelligence. Afterward, they completed an experimental task to measure response speed to emotional stimuli. In this experiment, participants responded to neutral, positive, or negative emotional pictures selected from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Results demonstrated that extraversion and neuroticism were not correlated to response speed to emotional stimuli. However, consistent with our predictions, openness to experience was associated (p&lt; .01) with the emotional information processing speed of positively valenced stimuli. Besides, the appraisal of emotions dimension of the trait emotional intelligence was also significantly and negatively correlated to response speed to positively valenced pictures. Although the present study provided only partial support for our predictions regarding the link between emotional information processing speed, personality, and emotional intelligence, our results have some preliminary implications for both researchers and practitioners. Accordingly, our study showed that openness to experience and appraisal of emotions might be a valuable construct for a better understanding individuals' responses to positive emotional stimuli and previously known personality traits.

The mid-level vision toolbox for computing structural properties of real-world images

Mid-level vision is the intermediate visual processing stage for generating representations of shapes and partial geometries of objects. Our mechanistic understanding of these operations is limited, in part, by a lack of computational tools for analyzing image properties at these levels of representation. We introduce the Mid-Level Vision (MLV) Toolbox, an open-source software that automatically processes low- and mid-level contour features and perceptual grouping cues from real-world images. The MLV toolbox takes vectorized line drawings of scenes as input and extracts structural contour properties. We also include tools for contour detection and tracing for the automatic generation of vectorized line drawings from photographs. Various statistical properties of the contours are computed: the distributions of orientations, contour curvature, and contour lengths, as well as counts and types of contour junctions. The toolbox includes an efficient algorithm for computing the medial axis transform of contour drawings and photographs. Based on the medial axis transform, we compute several scores for local mirror symmetry, local parallelism, and local contour separation. All properties are summarized in histograms that can serve as input into statistical models to relate image properties to human behavioral measures, such as esthetic pleasure, memorability, affective processing, and scene categorization. In addition to measuring contour properties, we include functions for manipulating drawings by separating contours according to their statistical properties, randomly shifting contours, or rotating drawings behind a circular aperture. Finally, the MLV Toolbox offers visualization functions for contour orientations, lengths, curvature, junctions, and medial axis properties on computer-generated and artist-generated line drawings. We include artist-generated vectorized drawings of the Toronto Scenes image set, the International Affective Picture System, and the Snodgrass and Vanderwart object images, as well as automatically traced vectorized drawings of set architectural scenes and the Open Affective Standardized Image Set (OASIS).

Examining the role of mood in pain-limited treadmill walking duration in young healthy individuals.

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of acute mood modulation on treadmill walking duration during experimental pain application. This was a repeated measure, within-subject study design. 30 healthy individuals (Males: Females 16:14; age 22.9 ± 2.5 years; height 170.9 ± 9.5 cm; body mass 68.4 ± 14.6 kg) attended a familiarization session and three experimental sessions, whereby they simultaneously viewed emotionally evoking stimulus from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) and performed two treadmill walking tests (maximum 10 min duration) with a fixed nociceptive input applied to the thigh (pressure cuff). The primary outcome was treadmill walking duration during pain application to achieve a fixed pain score. During walking, mood (Self-Assessment Manikin: SAM 0-9) and pain (numerical rating scale: NRS 0-10) were measured. Mood valence scores were significantly different in all conditions (p < 0.001), negative (2.4 ± 0.3), neutral (4.9 ± 0.6) and positive (6.6 ± 0.3). There was a significant difference (p = 0.04) in the treadmill walking duration for different mood states. For the primary outcome, post hoc analysis found differences between the negative and positive mood conditions for the treadmill walking durations to reach pain scores of 3 (negative: 224 ± 49 s; positive: 259 ± 60s, effect size [ES]: 0.80), 4 (negative: 262 ± 59 s; positive: 326 ± 90s, ES: 0.92), 5 (negative: 313 ± 86 s; positive: 385 ± 113 s, ES: 0.90), 6 (negative: 367 ± 106 s; positive: 447 ± 113 s, ES: 1.04) and 7 (negative: 423 ± 114 s; positive: 521 ± 110 s, ES: 1.02). There was no significant difference in the treadmill walking duration between the neutral vs negative mood and neutral vs positive mood conditions. These results highlight the potential psychophysiological impacts on the pain experience in healthy individuals and encourages pursuit in strategies to minimize pain-limited exercise, a highly prevalent issue in the chronic pain population. Walking-based rehabilitation, designed to improve physical activity, has been shown to improve pain and disability. However active participation and adherence in walking-based rehabilitation has shown to be jeopardized by pain and pain-related cognitive and behavioural adaptations. This study examined the effect of a shift in mood on pain perception and treadmill walking tolerance. We found that with a worse mood, individuals were less tolerant of pain and walked on the treadmill for a shorter duration. These results suggest that factors which improve mood should be combined with walking-based training to improve tolerance.

Altered emotional response pattern related to complex trauma in patients with borderline personality disorder.

This work aims to demonstrate, through the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) responses, an altered emotional pattern in borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients and to find a specific emotional response pattern by understanding their relationship with traumatic experiences and attachment bonds towards their primary caregivers. A total of 50 BPD patients and 39 control patients were evaluated using the IAPS, and its assessment was carried out through the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM). Paternal and maternal attachment bonds as well as traumatic experiences in BPD patients were evaluated. Statistical associations were analysed in the different variables. Significant differences between BPD and control patients were found in all emotional response components for pleasant, unpleasant and neutral images (p < .01), with one exception, the arousal in pleasant images. Patients' experience of traumatic experiences was positively related to scores on the happiness component of pleasant imagery (p = .057) and on the arousal component of unpleasant imagery (p = .058). Poorer maternal bonding in BPD patients was significantly related to lower scores on happiness (p < .01) and dominance (p < .05) components of pleasant imagery and all emotional response components for unpleasant imagery (p < .01). The results of the study confirm an impaired emotional response pattern in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), showing an emotional response to pleasant images similar to that of depression, while the pattern found to unpleasant images could be related to the complex trauma observed in these patients, which includes PTSD experiences such as sexual abuse and attachment trauma experiences.

Emotion differentiation through features of eye-tracking and pupil diameter for monitoring well-being.

Emotions are an important contributor to human self-expression and well-being. However, many populations express their emotions differently from what is considered "typical". Previous literature has indicated a possible relationship between emotion and eye-movement. The objective of this paper is to further explore this proposed relationship by identifying specific features of eye-movement that relate to six emotion categories: joy, surprise, indifference, disgust, sadness, and fear. Features of eye-movement are extracted from measurements of pupil diameter, saccades, and fixations. These measurements are collected as participants view images from the International Affective Picture System, a validated image deck used to evoke known levels of pleasure, arousal, and dominance. Example features of eye-movement measurements such as pupil diameter include maximum or minimum values, means, and standard deviations. Statistical analyses indicate that the extracted features of eye-tracking in this paper can identify fear and sadness with relative accuracy, while more work is needed to differentiate among joy, indifference, disgust, and surprise. Future work aims to understand differences between typically developing populations such as the individuals included in this analysis, and clinical populations such as individuals with cerebral palsy.Clinical Relevance- This pilot study suggests a link between emotion and features of eye-movement. The information will later be used to develop assistive communication devices that better meet the self-expression needs of individuals with motor and communication challenges.

Positive-Negative Affectivity and Decision Making Among Mindfulness Meditators and Non-Meditators

Mindfulness has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential benefits for&#x0D; cognitive and emotional processes. However, how mindfulness interplays with affect to exert its&#x0D; effect on decision-making remains relatively less explored. The present study examined and&#x0D; compared the performance of both mindfulness meditators and non-meditators on decisionmaking&#x0D; tasks under different affective states. A total of 100 participants (50 mindfulness meditators&#x0D; and 50 non-meditators) responded to the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and&#x0D; performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Both groups were further divided into positive affect&#x0D; and negative affect conditions. The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) was used to&#x0D; induce positive and negative affective states among the participants. The baseline affective state&#x0D; of the participants was assessed using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS).&#x0D; Independent sample t-tests and a univariate ANOVA were computed to analyze the obtained&#x0D; data. Results showed that mindfulness meditators scored significantly higher on the total FFMQ&#x0D; as well as on its different facets. Furthermore, the results revealed a significant main effect of&#x0D; mindfulness and the affect group on IGT performance. The interaction between mindfulness and&#x0D; affective conditions was also found to be significant. Mindfulness meditators performed equally&#x0D; well on IGT under both positive and negative affect conditions, whereas non-meditators&#x0D; performed better only under positive affect conditions. The findings have practical implications,&#x0D; as they suggest that mindfulness meditation enhances decision-making by promoting effective&#x0D; emotion regulation and suppressing impulsive responses during decision-making in different&#x0D; domains of life.

A look through dark-colored glasses: The Dark Tetrad and affective processing.

The Dark Tetrad personality traits (i.e., narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism) have been continuously linked to various deficits in affective reactivity. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of the Dark Tetrad and processing of emotional pictures. A total of 144 participants (56.9% female, Mage = 22.18, SDage = 2.26) completed measures of the Dark Tetrad, and rated pictures selected form the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), classified in accordance with their norms into highly arousing positive and negative. Affective processing measures included participants' valence and arousal ratings, while cognitive processing was measured my means of the response latency for each response. The results showed that the dark traits were related only to valence, but not arousal ratings. Higher narcissism and lower sadism were associated with more positive valence ratings of positive pictures, and higher sadism was associated with more positive ratings of negative pictures. Moreover, higher Machiavellianism predicted faster assessment of valence and arousal of both positive and negative pictures, and higher sadism predicted slower assessment of negative pictures' valence. Obtained results indicate that deficiencies in affective processing are more pronounced in sadism compared to other dark traits, while Machiavellianism is associated with advantages in cognitive processing, highlighting their significance and uniqueness in the Dark Tetrad constellation.
